FibroScan®

A non-invasive, painless scan used to estimate liver scarring and fatty infiltration of the liver

Overview

FibroScan® is a specialised, non-invasive test used to assess liver health. It measures liver stiffness (fibrosis or scarring) and estimates fat accumulation in the liver (steatosis), helping diagnose and stage liver disease without the need for a biopsy in many cases. The procedure is quick, painless, and performed in the clinic. A small probe is placed on the skin over the liver, and results are available immediately.

Why it is used

FibroScan® is commonly used to:

  • Assess fatty liver disease
  • Evaluate liver fibrosis (scarring)
  • Stage and monitor chronic hepatitis B and C
  • Monitor disease progression or assess response to treatment
  • Support risk stratification and treatment planning

What to expect

Before the scan

You will generally be asked to fast (eat nothing and drink only clear fluids, ideally water) for at least 3 hours prior to the test to ensure the most accurate readings.

During the procedure

You will lie on your back with your right arm raised above your head. A water-based gel is applied to your skin over the liver area (right side, lower ribs). The specialist places the FibroScan probe on your skin and takes several quick measurements. You may feel a slight vibration or pulse, but it is completely painless. The entire process takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

After the test

Because it is non-invasive, you can return to your normal activities immediately. The machine generates a report with a score for stiffness (kPa) and fat (CAP). During your consultation, Dr. Koffas will interpret these results in the context of your overall health and discuss any necessary next steps.
