EXPERTISE & EXPERIENCE
Dedicated to Excellence in Liver Care
Clinical Practice
Dr. Apostolos Koffas is a Consultant Hepatologist and Gastrointestinal Endoscopist at Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, and provides specialised hepatology services at Queen’s Hospital, Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.
He consults privately at leading central London locations, including Leaders in Liver Health and UME Health, with appointments available both in person and via secure virtual consultation.
He delivers comprehensive care across the full spectrum of liver disease, combining clinical expertise with a patient-centred approach focused on clarity, reassurance, and personalised management. His clinical practice encompasses abnormal liver tests, fatty liver disease, chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and its complications, viral hepatitis, and autoimmune liver disease. He runs dedicated specialised clinics, and works closely within multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated, evidence-based care.
Advanced Diagnostics & Endoscopy
Dr. Koffas specialises in non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis and steatosis, and has been certified in FibroScan®. This advanced ultrasound-based technology measures liver stiffness (liver scarring) and estimates fat accumulation in the liver, enabling accurate diagnosis and staging of liver disease without the need for invasive procedures in many cases. The test is quick, painless, and performed in the clinic, providing immediate results that help guide treatment decisions, monitor disease progression, and assess response to therapy.
Dr Koffas performs diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy) and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, including colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. These procedures allow direct visual assessment of the digestive tract and are essential in evaluating a variety of symptoms, such as abdominal pain, reflux, anaemia, altered bowel habits, or gastrointestinal bleeding. Endoscopy enables early detection of inflammation, ulcers, polyps, and cancers, and allows biopsies to be taken where necessary. When appropriate, therapeutic interventions, such as banding of oesophageal varices, can also be performed during the procedure.
Research & Education
Dr Koffas has a strong academic profile with a particular research focus on chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis D, including immune mechanisms, disease stratification, and treatment optimisation. His work has been published in leading international journals such as the prestigious Journal of Hepatology, Journal of Viral Hepatitis, and JHEP Reports, and he remains actively involved in clinical research at Queen Mary University of London.
His research collaborations span international centres and include studies on immune profiling in hepatitis B, predictors of treatment outcomes, and novel biomarkers guiding patient management. He has presented his work at major international liver meetings, including the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) congress.
Education and training are integral to his professional practice. Dr Koffas holds a leadership role in medical education at Queen Mary University of London, where he leads curriculum assessment and delivery, and quality assurance, while supporting final-year medical students transitioning to Foundation training. He is an experienced clinical supervisor, OSCE examiner, and educator of doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
